Eight Rabbits Go to Church
by Phil Wyman
Eight famous Rabbits went to church one Easter morning
Only six went in to see
The six had hoped they might discover
True Christianity
Five sat in the back, one stood by the preacher
two were in the parking lot
unconvinced that answers could be found in pew and pulpit
Some singing, and an offering as long as Heaven itself
exaggerated promise
an altar call, and push down prayers to cover people's loses
Six famous rabbits left a church one Easter morning
in the car they reminisced
with whispered warning, truth and mercy kissed
"These tricks are not for kids," Trix Rabbit glumly said
"like playing a commercial
it always costs me far too much, and gives me far too little"
The Magic Bunny fumed, "I've been pulled from too many hats
I have seen the tricks they play
abracadabra, and wave a wand, was it any different here today?"
Un Brer Rabbit sez, "I tinkin' dey trahd a trick me," sezzee
"dey to'd us bout o'd Brer Fox
Trahd a scare us into ta b'lievin' an' runnin' to da front"
spent and looking tired the Hare who lost to the Tortoise
spoke with wisdom and a sigh
"spirituality can not come like driving up for burgers and for fries"
"I've been searching all my life for something true and real,"
the Velveteen Rabbit said
"but did they promise me all the gains without the painful death?"
"Well I stood by the preacher man," Harvey the pooka said
"he did not hear or see me
I tried to tell him that my Jesus was certainly no Genie"
The Easter Bunny was the seventh, and he was just the driver
"I tried to tell you my friends
I've seen the cross, and the rolled away stone, this is no comparison"
So seven famous bunnies drove away sadder than when they came
just the eighth in glad habit -
that purring mechanical hare, they left in their Volkswagen Rabbit
